Details Press Release.

A Certain Evening Light, the definitive collection from Trembling Blue Stars, arriving today on CD (ER-1075) and digital platforms. Compiled from limited-edition seven-inch singles, rare B-sides and alternative versions spanning the band’s 1996–2003 career, this 17-track anthology traces Bobby Wratten’s evolution as one of British pop’s most poignant songwriters. Highlights include the previously unreleased holiday tune “Christmas & Train Trips & Things,” alongside landmark singles “Abba on the Jukebox,” “Dark Eyes” and “Ghost of an Unkissed Kiss.” Recorded at Mitcham’s home studio and prominent London facilities with longtime collaborator Ian Catt, the collection features contributions from key collaborators such as Keris Howard, Beth Arzy and Harvey Williams. A Certain Evening Light offers both a nostalgic retrospective for longtime fans and an accessible entry point for new listeners. To celebrate the release, Bobby and Beth will perform an exclusive acoustic showcase at Discos Revolver in Barcelona on April 20 and at La [2] de Apolo in Madrid on April 22, featuring stripped-down renditions of TBS classics. Early press acclaim includes Rockdelux’s designation as “Essential Reissue” and Mondosonoro’s selection as “New Releases of the Week.”

Achievements and awards

Trembling Blue Stars, led by singer-guitarist Bobby Wratten, debuted in April 1996 with the single “Abba on the Jukebox,” marking a cathartic turn from his previous work in The Field Mice and Northern Picture Library. At its core, TBS distilled Wratten’s eloquent reflections on love and loss into shimmering chamber-pop. Their debut album Her Handwriting (1996), produced with Ian Catt, mapped a breakup’s emotional arc from the wistful optimism of “A Single Kiss” to the rueful remorse of “To Keep Your Heart Whole.” Critics from NME and Melody Maker praised its literate lyricism and crystalline arrangements, while a BBC Radio 1 session for Mark Radcliffe cemented their reputation. Subsequent LPs—Lips That Taste of Tears (1998) and Broken by Whispers (1999)—showcased growing confidence, integrating richer textures and hints of Dream-Pop influence. “Dark Eyes” gained significant airplay, and Broken by Whispers topped US college radio charts on Sub Pop. Their fourth album, Alive to Every Smile (2001), introduced a new lineup featuring Keris Howard, Beth Arzy and Jonathan Akerman, adding depth to songs such as “Ghost of an Unkissed Kiss,” named Single of the Month on Radio 3’s Viaje a los Sueños Polares. The 2003 compilation A Certain Evening Light gathered rare tracks and fan favorites, while The Seven Autumn Flowers (2004) and its lead EP “Southern Skies Appear Brighter” extended the band’s sonic palette. Garnering international acclaim, TBS has remained a beacon of heartfelt, timeless indie-pop.

Artist Bio.

Trembling Blue Stars is the indie-pop project founded in 1996 by Bobby Wratten, formerly of The Field Mice and Northern Picture Library. Centered on Wratten’s introspective songwriting and achingly beautiful melodies, the band’s early work explored the aftermath of love’s end, beginning with the acclaimed debut single “Abba on the Jukebox.” Their first album, Her Handwriting, was recorded with producer Ian Catt and garnered praise from NME, Melody Maker and BBC Radio 1. Building on this success, subsequent albums—Lips That Taste of Tears (1998) and Broken by Whispers (1999)—expanded the band’s sonic horizons, blending jangle-pop guitars with lush orchestration. In 2001, Wratten enlisted Keris Howard, Beth Arzy and Jonathan Akerman, resulting in Alive to Every Smile, featuring the standout “Ghost of an Unkissed Kiss.” Elefant Records released the comprehensive rarities set A Certain Evening Light in 2003, followed by The Seven Autumn Flowers (2004) and its companion EP. Known for timeless, literate lyrics and crystalline arrangements, Trembling Blue Stars remains a touchstone of British indie-pop, with a legacy celebrated by critics and a devoted global fanbase.
