Details Press Release.

June 1, 2018 – Barcelona, Spain. Elefant Records is proud to present the definitive deluxe reissue of The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas, the long-misunderstood 1970 psych-folk opus by Nick Garrie. Originally recorded with Eddie Vartan and a 56-piece orchestra at Davou Studios, the album was shelved following the tragic death of DiscAZ head Lucien Morisse. Over the decades, the record has surfaced as a rare collectors’ gem, celebrated by Billboard and psychedelic aficionados worldwide. This deluxe edition restores Garrie’s original acoustic vision with remastered audio, includes previously unreleased demos from his Belgian sessions—such as “Silk and Stone” and “Cambridge Town”—and features a richly illustrated 24-page booklet penned by Garrie himself, recounting his surreal journey from Paris school choir to Amsterdam’s Paradiso and beyond. To commemorate the release, Garrie will perform a special acoustic showcase at Barcelona’s Sidecar on July 10, joined by guest musicians who contributed to his later Elefant album 49 Arlington Gardens. Available on vinyl, CD and digital formats, The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas deluxe edition is now available for pre-order through Elefant Records’ online store and select international retailers.

Achievements and awards

Nick Garrie’s career is defined by the rise, fall and resurrection of his “lost” psych-folk masterpiece The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas. Born in Yorkshire in 1949 and raised in Paris, Garrie cut his teeth in the 1960s singing in school choirs before studying surrealist poetry at Warwick. By 1968 he was performing acoustic originals along the French Riviera and Amsterdam’s Paradiso, only to have his earnings vanish and an agreed television appearance canceled. Undeterred, he recorded demos in Belgium, including early versions of “Deeper Tones of Blues” and “Bungle Tours,” which lay unheard for decades. Signed in 1969 by French label DiscAZ, he entered Davou Studios with producer Eddie Vartan and a 56-piece orchestra to craft The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas. Its lush string arrangements and surreal lyricism failed to reach audiences when label head Lucien Morisse’s suicide consigned the album to obscurity. Garrie retreated from music, carving out a life as a ski operator, rugby player and French teacher, occasionally returning as Nick Hamilton for the folk-influenced Suitcase Man (1984) and touring Spain with Leonard Cohen. In 2005, Rev-Ola’s reissue of Stanislas sparked renewed critical acclaim. A decade later, Elefant Records’ 2018 deluxe edition—complete with Garrie’s novelized liner notes and rare tracks—cemented its cult status and paved the way for Garrie’s triumphant folk-pop return with 49 Arlington Gardens in 2009, supported by Scottish indie luminaries. Today, Garrie’s legacy stands as a testament to artistic perseverance and the transformative power of rediscovery.

Artist Bio.

Nick Garrie (born June 22, 1949) is a Franco-British singer-songwriter whose early work fused surrealist-inspired lyrics with lush orchestral folk-pop. Raised in Paris and educated briefly at Warwick University, Garrie honed his poetic sensibility before recording demos in Belgium, among them early drafts of “Deeper Tones of Blues.” In 1969 he signed to DiscAZ and, with producer Eddie Vartan, released The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas—a sweeping 56-piece orchestral album that was tragically sidelined by label upheaval. Garrie stepped away from music to pursue diverse careers, re-emerging as Nick Hamilton in 1984 with the acoustic Suitcase Man, produced by Paul Samwell-Smith and featuring Alun Davies and Gerry Conway, which spawned Spanish hit “Back to 1930.” After touring Spain with Leonard Cohen, he released a third album in 1993 with Peter-John Vettese and Oscar-winning composer Francis Lai. A 2005 Rev-Ola reissue of Stanislas ignited renewed interest, leading to his Elefant Records debut 49 Arlington Gardens in 2009, celebrated by Scottish indie scene peers. In 2018 Elefant Records issued a deluxe edition of The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas, restoring Garrie’s acoustic essence and unreleased demos. His work stands as a testament to timeless songwriting and rediscovery.
