Details Press Release.

July 2, 1999 – Barcelona, Spain. Elefant Records is delighted to announce the signing of Les Très Bien Ensemble, Barcelona’s most enchanting francophone pop ensemble. Originally formed in January 1997 by vocalists Suzette and Philippe after meeting at a ME DUELE EL CORASSON concert, the band swiftly expanded to include bassist Michel, drummer Jacques, and organist Paul, collectively honing a sound steeped in the lush orchestration of 1960s French pop and the gentle sway of Brazilian bossanova. The group first garnered attention with elegantly reimagined covers of Serge Gainsbourg’s “L’anamour” and “Les Sucettes,” Michel Polnareff’s “La poupée qui fait non,” and Étienne Katerine’s “Samba des jours bénis,” before unveiling originals like “Je veux être un symbole sexuel” and “La fille la plus douce du monde.” Following standout performances at Sidecar, an acoustic mini-set commemorating RNE’s 50th anniversary that aired on Disco Grande, and a memorable appearance at the Ice Cream Pop festival, their debut four-track single—featuring two originals alongside two beloved covers—will be released on vinyl and CD-single in early July. Elefant Records looks forward to championing Les Très Bien Ensemble as they carry the torch of timeless francophone elegance. They make their Madrid debut September 18, 1999 at Siroco.

Achievements and awards

Les Très Bien Ensemble formed at the close of January 1997 when vocalists Suzette and Philippe crossed paths after a ME DUELE EL CORASSON concert in Barcelona. United by a passion for elegant, seductive francophone pop—from Michel Polnareff’s orchestral flair to Étienne Katerine’s playful irreverence, and the fragile perversity of Serge Gainsbourg alongside his muses France Gall, Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot—they envisioned a band performing exclusively in French. The lineup swiftly expanded to include Michel on bass and Jacques on drums. Initially rooted in crafted covers of Gainsbourg’s “L’anamour” and “Les Sucettes,” Polnareff’s “La poupée qui fait non,” and Katerine’s “Samba des jours bénis,” their live sets gradually embraced originals like Suzette’s “Je veux être un symbole sexuel” and “La fille la plus douce du monde.” Drawing equally from nouvelle vague film scores and Brazilian bossanova rhythms, the group carved out a distinctive niche within Spanish indie-pop circuit. By spring 1999, after recruiting organist Paul from Los Soberanos, they released a four-track single that blended vintage influences with compositions. Their refined sound, marrying 1960s orchestration with indie sensibilities, secured them performances at Ice Cream Pop and Radio Nacional’s Disco Grande, cementing their reputation as ambassadors of timeless francophone pop.

Artist Bio.

Les Très Bien Ensemble is a Barcelona-based francophone indie-pop group founded in January 1997 by Suzette and Philippe, later joined by Michel (bass), Jacques (drums), and Paul (organ). Inspired by 1960s French pop icons such as Serge Gainsbourg, Françoise Hardy, Michel Polnareff, and the playful irreverence of Etienne Katerine, the quintet weaves bossanova rhythms and nouvelle vague cinematic textures into original compositions and impeccably rendered covers. Their debut single, featuring “Je veux être un symbole sexuel,” “La fille la plus douce du monde,” and versions of “L’anamour” and “Les Sucettes,” established their signature blend of lush orchestration and sultry vocals. In April 2005, the band released their first full-length album Doux-Amer, recorded with analog vintage equipment to capture authentic 1960s sonorities. Celebrated for performances at the Benicàssim International Festival, Lemon Pop Festival, and supporting The Ladybug Transistor at Barcelona’s Apolo, they continue to champion timeless francophone elegance. With subsequent EP Rougeole (2008) showcasing evolved songwriting by Suzette and lineup additions including Charles Gasqué and Alain Roche, Les Très Bien Ensemble remain revered figures in Spain’s indie-pop landscape. “La fille la plus douce du monde” was voted a track on Radio Nacional in 1999; group’s acoustic set aired on Disco Grande.
