Details Press Release.

Under the pseudonym HD Substance, producer, DJ and former Undersounds editor Luis Rozalén releases his second album Cancer Pop. Building on the cerebral groundwork of his debut Eleven, Cancer Pop trades obsessive techno rhythms for relaxed, atmospheric soundscapes while preserving the eclecticism that defines Rozalén’s work. Recorded in Spain and abroad with longtime collaborators, the album presents twelve tracks that traverse house, acid, EBM and intelligent techno. Listeners first encounter “Stomach,” a pulsing opener underlain by hypnotic bass grooves, followed by “Ida,” an emotive mid-tempo exploration of dub-inflected textures. Centerpiece “Bossa Nostra” blends Brazilian-tinged rhythms with glossy synth pads, nodding to Rozalén’s international sensibilities. Lead single “Mushroom” arrives with remixes emphasizing funk-laced guitar stabs and neon-lit arpeggios, while “Happy Zombie” and the fractured beats of “Mushroom (Rox Version)” highlight his dynamic range. The album’s artwork, designed by Lawrence, reflects its nostalgic spirit. Cancer Pop will be supported by live sets at Sónar, Festimad, BAM, Art Futura and Benicàssim, followed by a national spring tour. Critics have praised it as “Rozalén’s most accomplished work yet” and “a masterful synthesis of club culture and melodic invention.” Cancer Pop is available now on CD, double LP and all digital platforms.

Achievements and awards

Luis Rozalén’s HD Substance project has been a cornerstone of Spain’s electronic music scene since the late 1990s. Born in Madrid, Rozalén first made his mark as a DJ and resident at Soma Madrid while serving as editor-in-chief of Undersounds, one of Spain’s pioneering club-culture magazines. Under the HD Substance pseudonym, he channeled childhood obsessions—from the Ramones to Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk—into a singular fusion of techno, house and experimental electronica. In 1997 he released his debut double LP/CD, Eleven, on Stereophonic Elefant Dance Recordings, earning acclaim for its cerebral rhythms and melodic depth. The following year brought the Mushroom maxi-single and a collaborative side-project Discodé with label-mate Prozack, whose Daft Punk–inspired grooves expanded his sonic palette. HD Substance’s electrifying sets at landmark festivals—Sónar, Art Futura, Festimad, BAM, Aural, Satisfaxion and Benicàssim—cemented his reputation as a visionary live act. In 1999 he advanced his sound with the album Cancer Pop, which traded obsessive rhythms for relaxed atmospheres while retaining his trademark stylistic diversity. Tracks like “Stomach,” “Ida” and “Bossa Nostra” appeared on international compilations, and his support slot at FIB ’99 confirmed his status among the era’s electronic vanguard. HD Substance’s live productions continue to shape Spain’s club scene.

Artist Bio.

HD Substance is the electronic alias of Madrid-based producer, DJ and journalist Luis Rozalén. A fixture of Spain’s club culture since the early 1990s, Rozalén began as resident DJ at Soma and editor-in-chief of dance magazine Undersounds. Inspired by the Ramones, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk, he abandoned pop drumming to form Ballet Mecánico, a techno-pop act that toured Europe before embracing acid house. In 1997, under the HD Substance moniker, he released his debut album Eleven, blending intelligent techno, EBM and ambient textures. The following year saw the Mushroom maxi-single and the Discodé collaboration with Prozack. His second album, Cancer Pop (1999), shifted to relaxed, atmospheric soundscapes without losing his eclectic approach. Tracks such as “Stomach,” “Ida” and “Bossa Nostra” appeared on major compilations. A sought-after live performer, HD Substance has played Sónar, Festimad, BAM and Benicàssim, earning praise for his dynamic sets. Renowned for his remixes edits, his productions have enriched international dance compilations and festival DJ sets. In 2000, Rozalén adopted the Milinko pseudonym, continuing to innovate across house, techno and experimental electronic music. His work as HD Substance remains influential, bridging club-floor energy with melodic inventiveness and cementing his status as a pioneer of Spain’s electronic underground.
