Details Press Release.

Elefant Records proudly announces the release of Simpático, the new five-track EP by Pamplona indie-pop quartet La Pequeña Suiza. Recorded at Carlos Torero’s Rock Soul Studios, Simpático marks the duo’s transition from instrumental demos to fully vocalized pop anthems. Ana (vocals) and Nacho (guitar, vocals) deliver heartfelt melodies over Jaime’s driving basslines and Fernando’s precise drumming, while Laura’s shimmering keyboards add a radiant sheen. Lead track “Pontevedra” opens with a pulsing sequencer beat before giving way to jangly guitars and warm vocal harmonies. “Canta en Español,” the group’s cult debut single, appears here in a fresh studio rendition, complete with its iconic riff and sing-along chorus. New compositions “Montecarlo” and “Brasilia” showcase their knack for blending Mediterranean flair with indie-pop sensibility, while the exclusive bonus track “Viviendo en los noventa”—previously a compilation standout—cements their status as Melodía del Año candidates. La Pequeña Suiza will celebrate Simpático with a release party at Madrid’s Sala El Sol on March 20, joined by label mates Marine Research and Vacaciones. The EP will be available March 1 on limited-edition ten-inch vinyl, CD-single and all major digital platforms. Early reviews praise Simpático as “a sparkling leap forward for Spanish pop” and “essential listening for any indie aficionado.”

Achievements and awards

La Pequeña Suiza emerged from Pamplona’s DIY scene in mid-1997 when guitarist Nacho began sharing his riff-driven pop demos with drummer-turned-bassist Jaime. That winter they added Laura on keyboards and vocals, and in December recorded their first lo-fi tape, LaPequeñasuiza canta en español, in Nacho’s bedroom. Despite being entirely instrumental—owing to a lack of microphones—it captured attention on Radio 3’s Diario Pop and Viaje a los Sueños Polares. Early 1998 saw the arrival of Fernando on drums and the four-track rehearsal demo De vacaciones con LaPequeñaSuiza, which showcased newfound rhythmic finesse and drum-machine grooves. By October they debuted live at Madrid’s Sala Maravillas. February 1999 brought a high-energy set at Siroco with Vacaciones and in spring they released their first Elefant single, “Canta en Español,” on green-vinyl 7″ and CD, earning cult status in Spain and Japan. Their 2000 Simpático EP—five songs recorded at Carlos Torero’s Rock Soul Studios—marked the first time Laura and Nacho’s voices featured, including the bonus track “Viviendo en los noventa,” already a favorite on Verano del 99 and Rock de Lux year-end lists. They supported Stereototal in Madrid and Barcelona (March 2000), Nosoträsh in April, and appeared on Radio 3’s live sessions and TVE2’s La 2. In 2001 their track “Pontevedra” joined Shellife’s US Picnic Basket compilation before the group amicably disbanded—leaving a brief but brilliant legacy of Spanish indie-pop innovation.

Artist Bio.

La Pequeña Suiza are a Spanish indie-pop quartet from Pamplona formed in late 1997: Nacho (guitar/vocals), Jaime (bass), Fernando (drums) and Laura (vocals/keyboards). Originating from bedroom demos and rehearsal-room four-track tapes, they built a devoted underground following through lo-fi recordings broadcast on Radio 3’s Diario Pop and Flor de Pasión. Their first instrumental demo, LaPequeñasuiza canta en español (1997), and second tape, De vacaciones con LaPequeñaSuiza (1998), laid the groundwork for their signature blend of catchy melodies, Kraut-tinged rhythms and minimalist production. In early 1999, Elefant Records signed them and released their cult single “Canta en Español” on green 7″ vinyl and CD, selling out quickly in Spain and Japan. They supported Vacaciones at Madrid’s Siroco and headlined Elefant showcases alongside Cecilia Ann and Juniper Moon. Spring 2000 saw the Simpático EP, recorded at Rock Soul Studios with Carlos Torero, featuring their debut vocal performances on tracks like “Pontevedra” and “Viviendo en los noventa,” the latter celebrated on Verano del 99 and Rock de Lux’s year-end poll. They toured nationally, supporting Stereototal and Nosoträsh, and appeared on Radio 3’s live sessions and TVE2’s La 2. Their song “Pontevedra” later featured on Shellife’s US Picnic Basket compilation (2001). Though they disbanded later that year, La Pequeña Suiza’s brief but luminous career epitomizes Spain’s late-90s DIY indie-pop renaissance.
