Details Press Release.

September 1, 2006 – Madrid, Spain. Proud to announce the release of No podemos volver a casa, the debut full-length album from Mirafiori, the musical project of songwriter Nacho Fernández. Originally founded as a duo in 2000 with Gonzalo Portellano, Mirafiori’s sound blends sixties folk-pop warmth and lush harmonies inspired by The Byrds and The Left Banke with the precision of Tomita-style synths and the subtle electronics of indie-pop pioneers such as The Field Mice and Brian. After garnering accolades for their home-recorded demos—honored as the second-best demo on Viaje a los Sueños Polares and featured in Rockdelux—and releasing the Cinco Minutos EP in May 2002, Nacho composed new material during extended stays in Germany and France. Recording began in late 2004 at Guille Mostaza’s Estudio Amarillo in Madrid, bringing together Nacho’s vocals, guitars, programming and keyboards with Mostaza’s bass, synths, percussion and violin. Completed in summer 2006 amid the disappearance of Annika Records, No podemos volver a casa emerges as a testament to creative resilience. It features fan favorites such as “Agujeros en la arena,” which will be accompanied by a video directed by Paco Casado and Richard García (Entre Líneas), starring Loreta Sáez and design by Rocabert. To celebrate, Nacho will lead a live band featuring Gonzalo Portellano, Guille Mostaza, Ana González and Antón Suárez for two special performances at Sala Siroco (Nov 1) and Sala El Sol (Nov 16), opening for Camera Obscura.

Achievements and awards

Mirafiori began in 2000 as a collaboration between childhood friends Nacho Fernández and Gonzalo Portellano, though it soon evolved into Nacho’s solo vision after Gonzalo relocated abroad. Their first home-recorded demos, tracked in April and September 2000, combined the warmth and harmonies of sixties folk-pop (The Byrds, The Left Banke) with crystalline electronics inspired by Isao Tomita and Erik Satie, layered atop programmed beats reminiscent of Family and The Field Mice. These seven tracks earned them second-best demo of the year on Viaje a los Sueños Polares, two number-one spots on El Kastillo de las Lágrimas, and enthusiastic nods from Rockdelux and key fanzines. Live performances followed in Madrid’s Ochoymedio and Café de la Palma with support from Portonovo’s Pablo Hernández and Carlos Yndurain. In mid-2001 they recorded the Cinco Minutos EP for Annika Records with production by Guille Milkyway (La Casa Azul) and graphic design by Gregorio Soria; though completed that year, its release was pushed to May 2002. “Cosas que es mejor no hacer” became June’s Disco Grande track of the month and “Cinco minutos” ranked fifth best national song in Rockdelux. After composing across Germany and France from 2003 to 2004, Nacho reunited in Madrid with producer Guille Mostaza to record the debut album No podemos volver a casa, finalized in summer 2006 for Autopop. Featuring material from their earliest demos through international residencies and collaborations with Reyes García-Miró, the album laid the foundation for Mirafiori’s rich sonic tapestry.

Artist Bio.

Mirafiori is the solo project of Madrid-based songwriter Nacho Fernández, who launched the name in 2000 alongside childhood friend Gonzalo Portellano before evolving into a singular creative endeavor. Drawing on influences ranging from The Byrds and The Left Banke’s sixties folk-pop harmonies to the classical precision of Erik Satie and Isao Tomita, Mirafiori fuses guitar-driven warmth with elegiac synth textures and understated electronic programming. Nacho’s early demos earned accolades on Viaje a los Sueños Polares and Rockdelux, leading to the Cinco Minutos EP (2002), produced by Guille Milkyway (La Casa Azul). After composing internationally, he returned to Madrid to record his debut album No podemos volver a casa (2006) at Estudio Amarillo with producer Guille Mostaza. Featuring songs born from periods in Germany, France and Madrid—such as “Recuerdos del lago artificial,” “Luciérnagas” and “En la luna”—the album showcases Mirafiori’s symbolic, often escapist lyrics wrapped in a veil of melancholic beauty. For live performances, Nacho leads a band including original member Gonzalo Portellano, Guille Mostaza, Ana González (Vacaciones) and Antón Suárez (Puré). Their striking visuals, melodic refinement and pop-traditional craftsmanship position Mirafiori as a poignant voice in Spain’s indie-pop landscape.
