Details Press Release.

Sisters Before Misters, the debut Mini-LP from Vigo’s electrifying punk-pop trio Wild Balbina, available today on vinyl and digital formats. Formed by singer-guitarists Antía Figueiras and Marta González with percussionist Guille V. Zapata, Wild Balbina honed their manifesto of raw energy and melodic immediacy in their hometown bunker throughout summer and autumn 2013. Self-recorded and co-produced by the band in collaboration with engineer Manu Sanz, Sisters Before Misters expands on the feral spirit of their debut 7″ Eat Tacos EP—a release that earned them a nomination at the Independent Music Awards. Across seven tracks, the album traverses riotous guitar jollies, surf-tinged reveries and C-86 jangle, all underpinned by feminist ethos. Highlights include the riotous opener “Wild Wild Balbina,” whose angular riffs and spiked harmonies recall early C86 acts; the hook-laden “Grit Girls,” marrying Girlschool swagger with California Dream-pop sheen; and the anthemic “No Sir, Mister,” featuring call-and-response vocals over a motorik backbeat. The band celebrates the release with in-store performances at Discos La Metralleta in Barcelona on June 15 and Discos Revolver in Madrid on June 22. Early press hails Sisters Before Misters as “a fearless collision of punk spirit and pop craft” (MondoSonoro). Wild Balbina’s debut promises to galvanize listeners and set the stage for a new chapter in Spanish DIY rock.

Achievements and awards

Wild Balbina emerged in Vigo in 2012 when conservatory friends Antía Figueiras and Marta González began writing songs in Antía’s living room, soundtracking their sessions with Wim Wenders films and Marisol records. After months of shapeless riffs, they recruited drummer Guille V. Zapata—whom they knew from his time in Munich—to anchor their sound. The trio crafted a feral punk-pop chemistry that blends the urgency of The Shop Assistants, Mabo Taxi and Helen Love with irreverent Galician wit. In April 2014 they captured this chemistry in a live-in-the-studio session at Manu Sanz’s famed Vigo facility (Fantasmage, Indómitos), producing their debut 7″ Eat Tacos EP for Elefant’s New Adventures in Pop series. Side A kicks off with the title track “Eat Tacos,” an unrelenting spiky guitar attack and anarchic chants evoking Tiger Trap and Talulah Gosh but charged with Bikini Kill–style Riot Grrrl ferocity. The B-side’s “So Kind” overlays spaghetti-western tremolo and cavernous echo on blistering rhythms, while “Spit Your Love” serves a crunchy, Beatles-in-the-garage pop gem fronted by a fierce, Yoko Ono–esque vocal. Closer “Surfin’” channels a late-’60s surf-pop shimmer reminiscent of The School sans David Lynch’s surreal polish. Alongside music, Antía and Marta amplify feminist discourse through their DIY cultural zine Typical Girls, cementing Wild Balbina as a vital force in Spain’s indie underground.

Artist Bio.

Wild Balbina is a Vigo-based punk-pop trio formed in 2012 by singer-songwriters Antía Figueiras and Marta González and drummer Guille V. Zapata. United by a shared background at the conservatory and a love of Wim Wenders soundtracks, the trio began crafting irreverent, guitar-driven anthems at home before laying down their feral debut 7″ Eat Tacos EP at Manu Sanz Studios in April 2014. Their sound fuses the urgent melodies of C-86 legends (The Shop Assistants, Talulah Gosh) with the riotous intensity of Bikini Kill–style Riot Grrrl and the tremolo shimmer of surf pop. Lyrically sharp and energetically performed, songs like “Eat Tacos,” “Spit Your Love” and “Surfin’” showcase their knack for crafting plus-perfect hooks within blitzkrieg arrangements. Beyond music, Antía and Marta co-publish the feminist cultural zine Typical Girls. Their debut Mini-LP Sisters Before Misters (2014) further elevates their DIY ethos, blending jagged guitars, vintage organ tones and vocal harmonies across seven tracks recorded in their own Vigo bunker. With festival appearances and in-store showcases at Discos La Metralleta and Discos Revolver, Wild Balbina has quickly established themselves as one of Spain’s most exciting independent acts.
