Details Press Release.

Sonreír, the highly anticipated debut LP from Murcia’s own Vacaciones, available today on CD and vinyl (ER-1085). Recorded at Estudios Refugio Antiaéreo in Granada and co-produced by Carlos Hernández and the band, Sonreír delivers fourteen irresistible tracks of breezy, guitar-driven pop and crystal-clear female vocals. Standout songs include the effervescent title track, the bittersweet single “Ahora Sí!!!” (backed with exclusive B-sides “SCC” and “Lloverá”), and a tender rendition of Lio’s “Amores Solitarios.” Early reviews from MondoSonoro hail Sonreír as “a masterclass in melodic indie-pop,” while Ciclo praises its “perfectly realized title,” and Tendencias notes its “conference-room-to-stadium accessibility.” To celebrate the album launch, Vacaciones will perform at Sala El Sol in Madrid on May 11 and at Festival ContemPOPranea in Alburquerque on July 27, sharing stages with Sing-Sing, Les Très Bien Ensemble and more. A new video for “No me digas que me quieres,” directed by Les Nouveaux Auteurs and featuring Amelia Fletcher, is available now on Elefant’s YouTube channel. Experience the joyous escape of Sonreír—Vacaciones’ most definitive statement yet.

Achievements and awards

Vacaciones formed in Murcia in April 1998 when Ruth, Ángel, Rafa (also of The Yellow Melodies) and José Alberto began crafting sun-drenched, crystalline-guitar pop with angelic female vocals, inspired by Heavenly and Los Fresones Rebeldes. Their debut stage appearance that July saw them invited to close a Hello Cuca and Los Fresones Rebeldes bill, with Felipe of Los Fresones on drums, performing what would become their breakout hit “Poppy Girl.” Shortly thereafter, Encarna joined as second vocalist for a celebratory school-year-end show for children. Elefant Records recognized their promise and in January 1999 released their four-track Dani EP, produced by Antonio Galvañ (Parade), earning rave fanzine praise and national radio airplay. After Encarna’s departure, keyboardist Ana joined, and the band supported La Pequeña Suiza and Los Planetas on major bills. Their standout single “Dani” sold over a thousand copies and charted in Japan and the UK. They co-headlined the inaugural Benicàssim festival with Marine Research and appeared at Ice Cream Pop, Lemon Pop and numerous Elefant showcases alongside Niza, La Casa Azul and Me Enveneno de Azules. In February 2000 they unveiled their expansive six-track single/CD-Single “Espero una Respuesta,” featuring four new songs and a France Gall cover. Their debut album Sonreír arrived in February 2002 to critical acclaim from MondoSonoro, Ciclo and Rockdelux, leading to festival slots at ContemPOPranea, Primavera Sound and FIB.

Artist Bio.

Vacaciones is a Murcia-based indie-pop quintet formed in April 1998 by Ruth (vocals), Ángel (guitar), Rafa (guitar), José Alberto (bass) and later joined by Ana (keyboards, backing vocals). Drawing on influences such as Heavenly, Los Fresones Rebeldes and LA’s sugar-coated guitar pop, they adopted their name after writing “Vacaciones en el Mar,” envisioning music as a seasonal escape from the everyday. Their debut EP Dani (1999) on Elefant Records, produced by Parade’s Antonio Galvañ, showcased their knack for sunny melodies and angelic harmonies, earning critical praise and international indie radio play. The single “Dani” surpassed a thousand vinyl sales and charted abroad. Their expansive six-track single/CD-Single “Espero una Respuesta” (2000) introduced deeper songwriting with B-sides “Un año de…” and a France Gall cover. Their debut album Sonreír (2002), co-produced with Carlos Hernández, comprises fourteen polished tracks balancing jangly guitars, memorable choruses and Ruth’s crystalline voice. Vacaciones have since graced major Spanish festivals—including FIB, Primavera Sound, ContemPOPranea and BAM—supported acts like Marine Research and Yo La Tengo, and released acclaimed singles such as “Ahora Sí!!!” Their music lives as a carefree holiday anthem year-round.
