Details Press Release.

September 15, 2002 – Birmingham, England. Elefant Records is proud to present Runnin’ Riot, the explosive debut album from Birmingham’s own punk-techno-pop duo Mogul. Comprised of vocalist Jonni and keyboardist Candii, Mogul channels the cheap-keyboard charm of Casio-style synths, the Eurodisco sheen of the 1980s and the anarchic edge of Iggy Pop into a fresh, defiantly ironic sound. Early career highlights include the “Jonni” track on Boa Records’ Noises from the Soundcupboard and a celebrated lo-fi cover of Oasis’s “Roll with It,” which attracted acclaim from New Musical Express and the BBC. Their singles “I Was Starving Hungry in Tesco’s” and Elefant’s own “Rotunda” paved the way for this full-length offering. Runnin’ Riot delivers an electrifying journey through high-voltage cuts such as “Midland Metro,” “A Clash of Hairdos,” “No Kicks” and “Bin Bag,” interspersed with rare tracks from previous splits, including “Precint” and “The Story of Ort.” The album’s centerpiece, “Better than Sex,” features three kinetic remixes by The Cuban Boys, ensuring unstoppable dancefloor appeal. Available now on CD and digital platforms via Elefant Records, Runnin’ Riot will be followed by headline performances in Birmingham, London and across Europe this autumn.

Achievements and awards

Mogul first emerged in Birmingham in 1996 when Jonni and Candii, a duo bonded by a mutual love of cheap Casiotone keyboards, Eurodisco rhythms and punk swagger, met dancing to “Teenage Kicks” by The Undertones. Inspired by the icy precision of Kraftwerk and the razor-sharp energy of Iggy Pop, they envisioned a sound that fused fluorescent techno-pop with street-corner grit. Their debut track “Jonni,” which appeared on Boa Records’ Noises from the Soundcupboard compilation, announced their arrival with lo-fi bravado. In 1998, their mischievous cover of Oasis’s “Roll with It,” issued as an Org Records single, drew high praise from New Musical Express and radio spins on Steve Lamacq’s BBC show. Subsequent singles “I Was Starving Hungry in Tesco’s” (Fortuna Pop) and “Rotunda” (Elefant Records) showcased their irreverent wit and mastery of dancefloor hooks. Building on these successes, Mogul released their debut album Runnin’ Riot in 2002. The record spans an exhilarating gamut—from the county-techno pulse of “Midland Metro” to the punk-chic vitriol of “No Kicks” and “Bin Bag,” and features the centerpiece “Better than Sex,” remixed by The Cuban Boys into three hyper-danceable versions. With its playful cover of Kraftwerk’s “The Model,” nods to Sigue Sigue Sputnik and collaborations with electronic collectives, Runnin’ Riot cemented Mogul’s status as pioneers of bubblegum-techno-punk-pop.

Artist Bio.

Mogul is a Birmingham-based synth-punk duo formed in 1996 by vocalist Jonni and keyboardist Candii. United by their love of cheap Casiotone keyboards, Eurodisco pop and punk’s raw attitude, the pair met dancing to The Undertones at a local club and set out to revive the spirit of Sigue Sigue Sputnik with their own twist. Inspired by Kraftwerk’s motorik precision and Iggy Pop’s brazen stagecraft, Mogul debuted on Boa Records’ Noises from the Soundcupboard with “Jonni” and followed that with a hit lo-fi cover of Oasis’s “Roll with It.” Their singles “I Was Starving Hungry in Tesco’s” (Fortuna Pop) and “Rotunda” (Elefant) cemented their reputation for cutting humor and dancefloor prowess. In 2002 they released their first album, Runnin’ Riot, a neon-lit collection of punk-techno pop that includes the breakout anthem “Better than Sex,” expanded by remixes from The Cuban Boys. With their ironic, street-wise aesthetic and unstoppable live shows, Mogul continue to lead a resurgence of underground techno-pop, blending bubblegum hooks with proletarian protest.
